2018 International Conference on Material Strength and Applied Mechanics (MSAM 2018)
Invited Speaker----Dr. Soon-Jong Yoon

Professor, Hongik University, Korea

Dr. Yoon is a professor at the Department of Civil Engineering in the Hongik University, Seoul, Korea. Professor Yoon received his Ph.D. degree in the Structural Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, U.S.A.) in 1993. His research in Ph.D. course was related to the local buckling behavior of pultruded fiber reinforced polymer plastics (PFRP) structural members, and he conducted researches on the Civil Enginering Structures using fiber reinforced polymer plastics such as a floating photovoltaic energy generation system, GFRP pipes for cooling water intake line of the nuclear power plant, hybrid GFRP-concrete composite piles, etc. His research results are published in eminent national and international journals indexed in SCI, SCIE, SCOPUS etc. He served also as a former President of the Korean Society for Advanced Composite Structures (KOSACS), and a member of executive boards of the Korean Society of Civil Engineers (KSCE) and the Korean Society of Steel Construction (KSSC). He also received several awards including best papers from the Korean Academic Societies and Grand Prize in relation to the construction and maintenance of infrastructures of Seoul, Capital City of Korea.

Speech Title: Structural analysis and design for the development of the floating type photovoltaic energy generation system

Aims: This research focuses on the development of the floating type photovoltaic energy generation structural system using PFRP members and the evaluation of structural behavior of the structural system.

Methods: The floating type photovoltaic energy generation system using PFRP members is developed based on the research results that include the finite element analysis, trial and error for design procedures, and installation and operation at the site for several years.

Results: The floating type photovoltaic energy generation system was developed based on the results of researches and constructed and operated at numerous sites in dams and reservoirs successfully, and the evaluation of structural behavior and maintenance are continuously under way.

Conclusions: From the research it was verified that the efficiency of the floating type photovoltaic energy generation system using PFRP structural members. The experiences obtained through the research which include the analysis and design of floating structure for the photovoltaic energy generation system and the power generation efficiency measured during operation of the system may be useful for the future research and system enhancement.
